From a Garbage Dump to a Greener Tomorrow

Real change begins when someone stops waiting for a problem to disappear and decides to do something about it.

On 26 July 2026, six volunteers from Kasley Foundation stepped out into heavy monsoon rain and took action at a roadside stretch near Sector 34 Seaface, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai — an area that had become a dumping ground for garbage and restaurant waste.

They did not wait for perfect weather or ideal conditions.

They brought their tools, cleared the waste around the planting spots and planted 26 trees.

What began as a tree-plantation drive soon became something more: a commitment to protect the trees, address the underlying problem and encourage accountability for the environment we share.

Six Volunteers. Twenty-Six Trees. One Determined Effort.

The plantation was carried out in continuous heavy rain, but the team remained committed to completing the work.

The July initiative included:

• 26 trees planted along the roadside stretch near Sector 34 Seaface, Kamothe.
• Garbage cleared by hand from around each planting location.
• Water-retention basins created around the trees to help collect monsoon rainwater.

Planting a tree is an important first step. Ensuring that it survives is the real challenge.

The volunteers recognised that the surrounding dumping problem could threaten the newly planted trees. Without protection and continued care, the effort risked being undermined by the very conditions the plantation was intended to improve.

Kasley Foundation therefore decided that its responsibility should not end with planting.

From Planting Trees to Seeking Action

On 12 August 2026, Kasley Foundation submitted formal representations to three authorities, seeking action to protect the plantation site and address the repeated dumping of waste.

The representations were sent to:

• Divisional Forest Officer / Deputy Conservator of Forests, Maharashtra Forest Department, Panvel — requesting an inspection and heavy-duty metallic fencing to protect the plantation.
• Sub-Regional Officer, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Raigad-I, CBD Belapur — requesting action regarding repeated illegal dumping.
• Municipal Commissioner, Panvel Municipal Corporation — requesting priority protection for the site and the trees planted by local volunteers.

The letters included the location's GPS coordinates and supporting photographs documenting the condition of the site and the plantation activity.

This was an important part of the initiative. Instead of limiting their response to cleaning and planting, the volunteers documented the problem and formally brought it to the attention of the relevant authorities.

Environmental responsibility means planting trees — but it also means working to create conditions in which those trees can survive.

A Visible Change: The Site Is Cleaned

Following the representations, Panvel Municipal Corporation cleaned the dumping site.

The clean-up is a meaningful step forward. The work is not yet complete: the long-term success of the initiative will depend on effective protection, continued maintenance and preventing waste from accumulating again.

Nevertheless, the site has moved from being an area of neglect to one where action has been taken.

What This Initiative Teaches Us

The lesson extends beyond 26 trees.

A community does not always need to wait for someone else to take the first step. Citizens can identify a problem, contribute their own time, document what they see and use the proper channels to seek corrective action.

Not every complaint leads to a solution. Not every plantation survives. And meaningful environmental improvement requires sustained effort.

But when people combine practical action with documentation, persistence and engagement with the authorities, they can help move a problem towards a solution.

Six volunteers began with 26 trees. Their effort also helped bring attention to a neglected dumping site and was followed by a municipal clean-up.

That is the kind of civic participation Kasley Foundation wants to encourage.

The Next Step Is to Keep Growing

Planting trees is only one part of creating a healthier environment. Protecting existing plantations, discouraging waste dumping and maintaining public spaces require continued community involvement.
